There's something extra special about fall in the apple orchard! Rows of apple trees, baskets of fresh picked apples, crisp autumn air, and beautiful colors in the background.
This year, some of my favorite fall sessions took place among the apple trees. They reminded me that there is so much more to a session that showing up and smiling at a camera. It can be an experience, an adventure, and an excuse to spend dedicated time with the people you love most.
FOR THE FAMILIES: A LITTLE APPLE ORCHARD ADVENTURE
Family photos don't have to mean everyone is standing in a line saying "cheese!" In fact, some of the sweetest moments happen when the kids explore, play and are able to be themselves.
Pick apples together. Let the kids fill a basket, reach for the highest apples, or show off their finds. These little activities give everyone something to do and help create some genuine interactions without having to ask for them.
Play among the trees. Walk hand in hand down the path or down orchard rows. Bump together along the way as you go to get everyone laughing. Play peekaboo behind the trees, or have the kids walk in slow motion towards the camera. Movement keeps little ones engaged and gives us plenty of opportunities to capture those natural family moments.
Bring a cozy blanket. Find a spot in the orchard and settle the family in for a little cuddle session! Sometimes the simplest moments end up being the most meaningful.
And parents - here's a reminder: everything doesn't have to be perfect. If someone gets distracted by an icky apple on the ground, or your toddler decides they'd rather wander off that smile at the camera, that is completely ok with me! We're making memories along the way.
FOR THE COUPLES: YOUR OWN LITTLE ORCHARD DATE
An apple orchard session isn't just for families. It's also the sweetest setting for a fall date with your favorite person. Think of your session as an excuse to slow down, get a little dressed up, and enjoy an evening together without your usual distractions. You don't need a special anniversary or a big occasion. Sometimes just being together is enough to celebrate.
Wander through the apple trees. Hold hands, stroll together along the rows, steal a kiss, enjoy a little uninterrupted time together. I'll offer guidance when it's needed, but some of the best photos happen when you forget about the camera (and me) all together.
Share an apple...or two. Pick out your favorites, take a bite together, or turn it into a playful competition to see who finds the best or biggest one.
Don't be afraid to be silly. Spin each other around, whisper something crazy, see who can make who laugh first.
And when the session is over? Keep the date going! Stop for dinner, visit the local farm stand, or head home with a bag of apples and plan something delicious to make together!
